Would you believe me if I told you that Iceland is even MORE beautiful covered in snow?! I even have the photos to prove it!
Last weekend Iceland broke a record for the most snow in years! So far the total is 18 inches with more on the way this week! Mind you, this is a normal snowfall where I’m from, but hey I’ll take it! Makes me feel at home 🙂
Texas really deprived me of my snow quota the past two years, so now I’m all, “aww, look at how pretty it is!” as it’s blizzarding for two days straight and people are getting stuck in the snow. You guys, I grew up in Wisconsin. I’ve definitely had my fair share of snow! But this Iceland winter has got me acting like a kid again!
So what do all people want to do when it snows two feet overnight?
GO OUT AND PLAY IN IT OBVIOUSLY.
So we put on our warmest gear and headed outside. Another reason we are thankful for our Defender is it plowed through that new snow like a BOSS. And that’s actually an accomplishment in Iceland because the plows and salt trucks aren’t out clearing the roads at 1am like I’m used to! This is one of the main roads in Reykjavik at 10am, no lane lines in sight!
Elliðaárdalur is the place to be! This park is a prime spot for walking through never ending beauty and photo ops. I couldn’t believe how magical it looked with fresh snow!
Now I had just visited Elliðaárdalur two months ago for the glorious autumn colors, so I wanted to go back to the same beautiful waterfall spot! I told Bobby “of course I know where I’m going! Just park here and we walk down this path and its right across the river!” By now he should know not to listen to my kind of directions when embarking on a search like this. One wrong turn through those snowy woods and I was completely turned around! (Right now my dad is just shaking his head, because he knows this is so true! I can´t help it that I´m a female and I have a terrible sense of direction!)
At least we had a ridiculously scenic walk while we got lost!
And then I get distracted and start playing in the snow.
Are you kidding me tall beautiful pine tress?! And how is the snow just perfectly placed ever so gently on the branches? I’m telling you, it was like a movie scene!
So after some back tracking and more wandering, we found the waterfall. That’s when I start acting like an embarrassing foreigner again! Jumping around and yelling, just a normal day for this American in Iceland!
I just love this waterfall and it’s even better that it’s right in the middle of the city! Icelandic nature at it´s best, folks!

Snowy day mission success! We had such a fun day walking around in this beautiful park and playing in the snow.
Question: What is your favorite thing to do on a snowy day?
Thank you! My favorite too, the perfect dose of nature right in our city!

Hi Meredith! The walk to Elliðaárdalur from the main area of Reykjavik would be too far. (I added a map in the post to help you) I recommend taking a bus which is really easy to do. Go to straeto.is to plan your trip or buy a ticket. You would want to get on at Hlemmur, the main bus stop in downtown. Looks like its a 15 minute bus ride and then a 5 minute walk to get to the park area. From there you could easily walk around Elliðaárdalur for an hour! Everything is so beautiful, and there are multiple waterfalls along the way!
Enjoy your trip to Iceland!

Hi Jeannie, I just wanted to let you know that I ended up going here based on your post and it was absolutely stunning!! I walked, taking the ‘scenic route’ from my hotel making a stop at the Perlan and enjoying some different viewpoints along the way that I would not have had otherwise 🙂 Thanks again for the info!
